It's the Halloween weekend! So it's the perfect time to get some trick or treats and a dose of spooky scares 🎃 , but the best part of this season is always the preparation and anticipation of the exciting events and fun activities you've got planned and personally, I'm enjoying the marathon of movie madness just waiting on my line-up!

Speaking of binge watching, here's a kid-friendly movie that you might fancy with the young ones over at your homes:

To start with, I was going into this movie blind, like I only read the synopsis (didn't exactly bother with watching the trailer)-- kid who's a fan of horror stories gets tricked by a witch mumbo jumbo-- thought this was just your typical kid-horror vanilla where everybody can get their happy ending, with no real sense of danger that they're doomed (like dead doomed), but surprisingly, this film had several more complexities to its tale than just scaring your kids on Halloween (and never taking treats from strangers no matter how ironic that is considering the seasonal tradition).

Alex, our protag, turns out to be not just a fan of the horror genre, but is actually an aspiring author of such tales who just so happens to be stucked in the dreaded writer's block. (i feel you lil bro, i have yet to pull myself out of it too and get back to my fiction writing...) Fortunately Unfortunately for him though, there's this hella hot witch who whisks him away to write said stories for her... entertainment(?) Is that all there is to their arrangement though? Or is there a more sinister evil lurking in the shadows here?

Yeah, Krysten Ritter playing as Natacha the Witch here can be pretty--I mean nasty here, so don't make the mistake of not taking here seriously. And another thing I really loved about this film, is that we got a couple short stories out of Alex's slump (writers just need that tough love most of the times, sometimes your own life just so happens to be on the line though).

Let's also talk about the aspect that nothing is what it seems here-- not all evil stays evil, sometimes becoming evil is a matter of survival, and the good ol' rotten as hell evil we're all just somehow managing to keep at bay-- there's even a short part of this movie where I felt the kids wouldn't get a happy ending at all, being forever trapped in that magical limbo space. Thankfully we're not in the Twilight Zone here, and most happy endings are worth facing your inner fears and demons for.

So how will I rate this particular movie in the scare-o-meter? If you're going to base it on jumpscares alone, the couple that are here are preeetty predictable. The kicker that sets this apart from your usual cheap slasher horror movies though is that you can take something inspiring out of the end of this adventure, moreso if you're an aspiring writer finding your way out of the slump.
